No H7N9 Epidemic Among Poultry, Says Expert

No H7N9 Epidemic Among Poultry, Says Expert

10 April 2013
CHINA - A preliminary analysis
shows that H7N9 bird flu has not
triggered an epidemic among
poultry, according to a Tuesday
report in the "People's Daily" that
cited a veterinary expert....No
epidemic that mean no worsen
outbreak if the virus mutates to spread

among humans, a pandemic could

follow...... Wanzulswiftlet

Of the 738 samples collected from three live poultry markets in Shanghai, where the first known human deaths of the disease were reported, only 20 samples contained H7N9 virus, including ten from chickens, three from pigeons and seven from environmental samples, the report said.
The government's chief veterinarian Yu Kangzhen was quoted as saying that it was the first time the Ministry of Agriculture had detected the virus in domestic animals.
The relationship between the virus detected in poultry and the virus that has infected humans has yet to be determined, Dr Kangzhen said.
The possibility of infection among animals in other regions has not been ruled out and the ministry has called for epidemic monitoring for animals across the nation, the report said.
It quoted Dr Kangzhen as saying that it's still safe to eat poultry meat purchased from regular channels, such as supermarkets, as long as they are thoroughly cooked.
"The virus could be killed under high temperature," he said.

Katanya delegasi enam orang itu merangkumi pakar daripada Certification and Accreditation Administration (CNCA), China Entry Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (CIQ) dan Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine (CAIQ), yang diketuai Timbalan Ketua Pengarah CNCA, Li Chunguang.

The bird's nest industry faces total wipeout if export issue to China is not handled properly, says Malaysia Birds Nest Alliance

PUTRAJAYA: About 500 swiftlet farmers submitted a memorandum to the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry today asking to be included in future negotiations with regard to the bird’s nest industry....... Wasted, MOA Never listen to you all. This is not the first time memorandum sent to MOA.......wanzulswiftlet
Malaysia Birds Nest Alliance president, Lim Lai Soon, said nearly all of the country’s raw and unprocessed bird’s nest producers and farmers are currently in limbo.
About 250 tonnes of Malaysian bird’s nests were exported to China before the country imposed a ban in July 2011 after finding high levels of nitrites in the products.
“We want to draw attention of the authorities on a possible wipeout faced by growers if the situation is not properly handled and managed. It could spell an end to the industry.
“We urge the government to include us in all future negotiations concerning the bird’s nest industry,” said Lim.
He claimed that although the Nanning Protocol was signed in September 2012, which allowed for the re-entry of edible birds’ nest into China, till today none of the cleaned bird’s nest from Malaysia have been cleared for export to China.
“The protocol ignored the larger community of growers who merely produce original raw bird’s nest which are not included in the agreement. This community of growers take up 95% of the total production of birds’ nest in the country,” he said.
He added that as a result, the raw bird’s nest could not find an avenue for consumption, which has since resulted in a serious glut.
Negotiations still ongoing
Lim also claimed that the present scenario is due to the “scheming” acts of individuals who recommended to both the authorities in China and Malaysia, to impose strict guidelines for export of bird’s nest, which were made central to the protocol negotiations.
“We wish to reiterate to the government of the day to listen to the voices of swiftlet farmers to expedite the raw bird’s nest export to China,” Lim said.
Later at a press conference, chief secretary of the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry, Mohd Hashim Abdullah, said a series of discussions between the ministry and authorities in China are on ongoing to resolve the issue.
He added that the Cabinet has come out a directive to the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China, Ong Ka Ting, to assist in solving the issue.
“We hope that with his experience and connections, the process can be hastened. He will try to ensure the Chinese come here as soon as possible.
Hashim said that the Chinese will come over to audit the processing plants besides observing the plantation’s system.
“We are at the final hurdle right now; currently we are just waiting for China to come here and audit our system and I hope bird’s nest can be cleared for export as soon as possible.
Veterinary Services Department director-general, Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin, also said that a meeting will be held to discuss the issue further on March 14 with Ong in attendance.

Novel Influenza A(H7N9) Virus Linked to Human Disease in China, April 2013

CHINA - A novel influenza virus of avian origin

, influenza A (H7N9), has been isolated from patients with

severe respiratory disease in China. Eleven

human cases have now been confirmed,

including five deaths. Monitoring of the cases'

contacts suggests that the new virus currently

does not spread easily from human to

human.........Good news it not easily

transmitted  human to human but bad news

this new strain more virulent than H5N1........

Influenza viruses circulating in animals pose threats to human health. Humans can become ill when infected with viruses from animal sources, such as avian influenza virus subtypes H5N1 and H9N2 and swine influenza virus subtypes H1N1 and H3N2. The primary risk factor for human infection appears to be direct or indirect exposure to infected live or dead animals or contaminated environments

Predator is a big problem to Bh owner

New Vaccine to be 'Holy Grail' for Global Disease Control

31March 2013
UK - A new synthetic vaccination could signal a new era in vaccine development.
Scientists have developed an entirely synthetic vaccine that triggers response through minute protein shells.
According to its developers, the development is ‘the holy grail’ of vaccines as it means that treatments can be developed without relying on the growth of live infectious virus. This will help reduce diseases spreading to disease-free areas and could also alter how viruses from the same family are fought- like polio.
These latest developments are a product of collaborative research between Professor David Stuart, University of Oxford, and Dr Bryan Charleston, Head of Livestock Viral Diseases Programme at The Pirbright Institute.
The new methodology totally reduces the possibility of an empty shell vaccine dangerously returning to an infectious form.
“What we have achieved here is close to the holy grail of foot-and-mouth vaccines. Unlike the traditional vaccines, there is no chance that the empty shell vaccine could revert to an infectious form,” said Professor Stuart.
“This work will have a broad and enduring impact on vaccine development, and the technology should be transferable to other viruses from the same family, such as poliovirus and hand foot and mouth disease, a human virus which is currently endemic in South-East Asia,”
Professor Stuart explained that the new methodology comes from the work of Professor Ian Jones at the University of Reading.
This work was added to through use of equipment at Oxford University that allowed the team to visualise the outer protein coat of the virus a billion times smaller than a pinhead allowing atom by atom design.
Additionally, vaccine storage could become easier which will aid production and reduce costs as cold storage chains should no longer be necessary.
Nigel Gibbens, the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer said: “This vaccine is a major breakthrough that has the potential to be an invaluable new weapon in the fight to eradicate foot-and-mouth disease.”
“Once available, vaccines of this type would have clear advantages over current technology as a possible option to help control the disease should we ever have another FMD outbreak.”
Minister for Universities and Science, David Willets, congratulated staff at The Pirbright Institute and Oxford and Reading Universities, proclaiming the news as a 'great achievement'.
The work was funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, UK (Defra) and the Wellcome Trust.

Kepentingan monsun terhahap kehidupan burung walet

selamat menimba ilmu..

China alert for BF from Combodia

Chinese woman dies of bird flu

BEIJING: A woman in southwestern China died of bird flu on Wednesday, state media said, a rare case in the country of a fatality from the H5N1 virus since a major outbreak a decade ago.

The 21-year-old patient from Guiyang passed away 13 days after showing symptoms, Xinhua news agency said, citing the health ministry.

Another city resident, a 31-year-old man who developed signs of the virus around the same time, was reported over the weekend to be in critical condition.

More than 365 people have died of bird flu globally since an 2003 outbreak, the World Health Organisation said in its latest report.

It noted that China has seen one fatal case per year since 2010, down from a total of 25 from 2003 to 2009.

The H5N1 virus typically spreads from birds to humans through direct contact, but experts fear it could mutate into a form transmissible between humans.

Xinhua said neither of the Guiyang residents had come into close contact with birds and their cases appeared to be unrelated.

China is considered one of the nations most at risk from bird flu epidemics because it has the world's biggest poultry population and many chickens in rural areas are kept close to humans.

Separate outbreaks among birds were reported last year in the northern region of Ningxia and the remote northwestern region of Xinjiang, prompting massive culls of chickens.

Bird flu deaths reach five in Cambodia

Phnom Penh - Five people have died from bird flu in Cambodia this year, authorities said Friday, up from three for the whole of 2012.

The fifth fatality from the H5N1 virus was a 5-year-old from Takeo province, who died in hospital on Thursday, said Sonny Inbaraj Krishnan, a spokesman for the World Health Organization (WHO).

A sixth victim recovered in January, he said, adding that no human cases of bird flu have been reported outside Cambodia this year.

A team from the Ministry of Health had travelled to the girl’s village to test residents and advise them on how to avoid infection,he said.

"They will take swabs and draw blood and test it for the virus soas to rule out human-to-human transmission." All human cases of H5N1 have been infected by contact with poultry, but health professionals fear the virus could combine with another or mutate and gain the ability to pass between people.

The authorities in Takeo province in south-eastern Cambodia were also checking that infected birds are not moved. Last month agriculture teams culled 4,700 chickens and ducks in Takeo after another death from the disease.

In 2011 the WHO recorded eight Cambodian deaths from bird flu, the country’s highest toll since the virus was first detected in thecountry in 2005.

The disease has killed 365 people out of 616 infected worldwide in the past decade, the WHO said.//DPA

Different states different guideline for swiftlet Farming

Bird's nest production to top RM3.5bn in 2020

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is expected to have 63,000 swiftlet premises in 2020, producing 870 metric tonnes of bird's nest worth RM3.5 billion.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said this is based on the high value and large potential for swiftlet farming in the country.
He said in 2010 alone, the production of bird's nest was around 290 metric tonnes valued at RM1.2 billion.
"The government has identified swiftlet farming as a high potential industry, and as such, accorded it priority in the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP)," he added.
He was speaking at a ceremony to officiate the opening of the Certification Seminar for good swiftlet Farm Practices Scheme (SALT) here today.
Yahya, who is also the state Agriculture and Food Industries Minister said in Sabah, the production of Edible Bird Nest (EBN) had long been practised, particularly, traditional bird's nest of high quality from caves, including Gua Guomantong and Gua Madai.
He said the export value of bird's nest contributed by Sabah was in the range of about RM13 million to RM17 million annually, with the main markets being Hong Kong and China.
He said apart from caves, the rearing of swiftlets was on the rise. "According to the Sabah Wildlife Department, in just 2009, there were 500 swiftlet premises in the state," he added.
Yahya said however, over the last two years, the market for bird's nest had fallen, following allegations that it contained nitrite which could endanger the health of consumers.
"Following enforcement to ensure zero nitrite by China, the price of bird's nest suffered a sudden fall of up to 50 per cent.
"The Malaysian government however, has discussed with its Chinese counterpart, on ensuring that the quality of bird's nest from the country met the standards set," he added.
Yahya said that for last year, 43 swiftlet premises in the state had met the SALT certification, and in 2013,, the Department of Veterinary Services and Animal Husbandry (JPHPT) had targeted 300 premises.
He expressed the hope that more plants for the processing of bird's nest would be established, making Sabah the main producer of the product of high quality, which also met the standards of importing

Volunteers wanted for bird flu vaccine trial

Updated Fri Feb 1, 2013 10:38am
Researchers in Newcastle are doing their bit to help protect the world against a potentially deadly outbreak of the bird flu virus.
Only about 600 people worldwide are known to have had the virus but it carries a mortality rate of three in five.
That has got the United States government concerned and it is funding a global vaccine project being trialled in humans.
Newcastle's Hunter Clinical Research is one of the centre that has been chosen to take part.
It is looking for volunteers to undergo human trials of an H5N1 vaccine which could be stockpiled in readiness for a global pandemic.
Principal researcher, Dr Marc Russo, says the vaccine trial is important, despite there being no imminent threat from bird flu.
"The insurance policy is that should there be a mutation in the virus, and the virus does undergo regular mutation," he said.
"If it does mutate and we get human to human transmission then we would be looking at millions of infections and potentially a very large number of deaths."
Researchers are hoping to find out the smallest dose of the vaccine needed for human protection.
They hope to have the results within two years.

Bird flu kills two Cambodian children, taking 2013 toll to four

Phnom Penh - Two children have died of bird flu in Cambodia, bringing the number of cases recorded this month to five, officials said Tuesday.

A 17-month-old girl and a 9-year-old girl died Monday after contracting H5N1 influenza, a joint statement from the World Health Organization and Cambodia’s Ministry of Health said.

The children were from villages in the southern provinces of Kampong Speu and Kampot, where recent poultry deaths had been reported, they said.

"I urge parents and guardians to keep children away from sick or dead poultry, discourage them playing in areas where poultry stay and wash their hands often," Cambodian Health Minister Mam Bunheng said.

The Ministry of Health last week confirmed three additional human infections, two of which resulted in death.

A 15-year-old girl and a 35-year-old man both died after contracting avian flu, but an 8-month-old boy survived after falling ill in Phnom Penh.

A total of 26 H5N1 infections have been recorded in Cambodia, 17 of which were in children under 14. A total of 23 people have died from complications of the virus.//DPA

The Citarum river is now considered one of the world’s dirtiest rivers

Back in the 1980s, the Citarum river, was a place where villagers in Karawang distrit visit to bath, wash clothes and catch fish for barbecues
The 269 kilometres river flows through 12 districts and cities, and into the Java Sea.It supplies 80 per cent of raw water to the capital of Jakarta and generates 1,400 megawatts of electricity.
Sadly, the Citarum river is now considered one of the world’s dirtiest rivers and fish are no longer plentiful.
“Now the water is so dirty we don’t even dare touch it because we’ll get itchy skins,” said 46-year-old Sumiyati, who used to catch fishes at the river when she was younger.

It has become a convenient waste dump by factories and residents of the area

Will Governments Get to Grips with Antibiotic Use?

ANALYSIS - The use of antibiotics on farm has been causing concern among consumers, farmers, politicians and lobby groups for some time and it is starting to become a major crusade for some to restrict their use, writes Chris Harris.
Where it was once left to veterinary and medical groups to draw up guidelines over their use, now antibiotics and antibiotic resistance are at the centre of a heated political debate and calls for strict legislation and regulation.

The concern surrounds the liberal use of antibiotics as a blanket measure to prevent disease and in some countries the use as a growth promoter for some animals.

In the US, the campaign to restrict antibiotic use has been led by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter.

In her campaign among politicians and in the food and farming industry Congresswoman Slaughter said: "Very simply, consumers have a right to know what's in their food.

"The US is facing a growing public health crisis in the form of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and information about how these companies are contributing to its rise or resolution should be available to consumers."

Flu emergency declared in New York

New York's governor has declared a public health emergency for the state over a flu epidemic ( when an infectious disease  "common disease " is spreading to the majority of the population in a certain area. There are three  Categories of infectious diseases, endemic ( a disease that repeatedly appears in small numbers of a population ),epidemic & pandemic that has sickened more than 19,000 people, allowing pharmacists to immunize infants and children.
Governor Andrew Cuomo's move on Saturday comes as officials across the US grapple with the worst flu outbreak in several years.
There have been at least 28,747 cases reported across the country so far this season, and 20 children have died from the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, the true number of cases is likely far higher as many who fall ill do not go to the doctor to get tested.
In hopes of curbing the spread of the potentially lethal virus, Cuomo said it was critical to suspend, for the next 30 days, a legal limit that usually only allows New York pharmacists to administer flu vaccines to patients 18 years of age or older.
"We are experiencing the worst flu season since at least 2009, and influenza activity in New York State is widespread, with cases reported in all 57 counties and all five boroughs of New York City," Cuomo said in a statement.
"Therefore, I have directed my administration, the state health department and others to marshal all needed resources to address this public health emergency and remove all barriers to ensure that all New Yorkers -- children and adults alike -- have access to critically needed flu vaccines."
In New York state alone, 19,128 cases have been confirmed this season, a jump from the total of 4,404 during the 2011-2012 flu season.
Large-scale campaign
In order to facilitate access to flu shots, the New York Health Department is also launching a large-scale campaign promoting flu immunisation through the media, dedicated websites and social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
Urging non-immunized New Yorkers to schedule a flu shot "immediately," Cuomo reminded them that "it is NOT too late to get a vaccination".
The governor stressed that relatives and caregivers who regularly come into contact with young children or people at high risk should get a shot against the flu virus, which can spread through coughing or sneezing.
The virus poses an increased risk for infants and toddlers under the age of two, people over 50, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems or chronic medical conditions.
Flu strikes every year across the United States, bringing chills, sore throats, fever, coughing and achy misery to millions.
The number of annual deaths has ranged from a low of 3,000 to a high of 49,000 since 1976, according to the CDC.
