HK holds exercise to prepare for avian flu outbreak

HONG KONG, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) of Hong Kong on Thursday conducted a field simulation exercise to review its preparedness in case a poultry culling operation is required in response to an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the territory.


Although local poultry farms have been free of HPAI since the end of 2008, Hong Kong must stay vigilant to prevent avian influenza as there have been HPAI cases in nearby regions from time to time," said the city's Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Alan Wong, after observing the exercise.
About 100 staff took part in the exercise. Representatives from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore were also present.

Nazri says no objection to non-Malay PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — De facto law minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz says he has no problem with a non-Malay prime minister as long as the best man gets the job.
“If it happens that the best person is a non-Malay, so be it,” he told The Edge Financial Daily in an interview published today.
“I cannot say, ‘I’m Malaysian first, but the prime minister must be Malay.’ You can’t have your cake and eat it (too).”

“Yes, I am a Malaysian first and Malay next. Does any bigot have a problem with that?” the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department had said in an open letter to Utusan Malaysia last September.

GLOBAL POULTRY TRENDS – Chicken Continues to Gain Popularity in Asia

Relatively high meat prices will act as a brake on meat consumption in 2011, particularly in the developed economies where the recession has bitten deeply, writes Terry Evans in his overview of broiler meat consumption trends in Asia. However, on the bright side, economic growth in some developing countries may well give consumption a boost, particularly for competitively priced chicken meat.

Because chickens have a better feed conversion than their competitors, higher feed prices may benefit chicken sales in developed economies as consumers switch from the more expensive meats. But, in those developing economies that have not witnessed real income growth, increases in poultry prices may cause some consumers to stop buying chicken. There are indications that the availability of feed ingredients will expand as cereal producers react to higher prices. This could help reduce the rate of food price inflation in the short term. 


Globally in 2011, our estimates indicate that chicken uptake could show a gain from 12.3kg to 12.5kg per person, while in Asia the average eaten could reach 7.2kg as against 7.0kg for 2010.


Assuming that the data for chicken meat production in India, as presented by the USDA is correct, consumption currently stands at 2.2kg per person per year 


During 2010, China is estimated to have produced 12.6 million tonnes of chicken meat.These figures point to an estimated consumption of around 9.5kg per person per year, which is projected to reach a record 10kg this year. 


Only Saudi Arabia and Iran possess larger oil reserves than Iraq, where oil exports are expected to be the key to the growth of this country's economy .the current estimate of around 18kg/person compared with only 10kg just a few years ago.

Ingredients (6 -8 servings)

1½ kg (3 lbs) lean stewing beef
2 large onions, coarsely chopped
2-3 carrots into 2" strips lenghtways
1 small turnip (or swede) cut onto ¾" cubes
Groundnut oil for cooking
1 tinny (330ml) Guinness (or stout beer)
3 tablespoons plain flour
2 tbls tomato puree
1 OXO (beef stock) cube
½ tsp chilli powder
Freshly ground pepper
Sprig of thyme


7. Add the Guinness (stout) and tomato puree to the frying pan and bring to a simmer. Add the stock cube and mix well ensuring all the caramalised juices on the frying pan disolve. Pour into the casserole dish. 

Conference Tackles Antibiotic Use

US – The issue of antibiotic use in food animals and its effect on antibiotic resistance in humans was discussed at a two-day conference in Chicago, writes Chris Wright, senior editor of ThePoultrySite.

“Antibiotic Use in Food Animals: A Dialogue for a Common Purpose” a symposium organised by the National Institute for Animal Agriculture, took a close look at how antibiotics are used in animal husbandry and its effects on human health.


Dr Scott Hurd from Iowa State University set the stage by saying that the presence of a hazard creates concern, but concern is not risk. Human health risk requires sufficient exposure that will result in actual harm.


He stressed that the causal chain for antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacterial food borne risk assessment includes:

1. AMR bacteria are selected in the food animal as a result of antimicrobial use;
2. humans ingest sufficient AMR bacteria present in the relevant food product from treated animals;
3. disease which causes the patient to seek medical care and treatment with an antibiotic to which the bacteria is resistant that results in an adverse health outcome.

He stated that risk management interventions at various points along the causal chain are intended to minimise and contain AMR food borne bacteria to ensure public health and food safety.


A panel of veterinarians specifically addressed: beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine and poultry. They all agreed that while there was minimal risk that the use of antibiotics in animals caused resistance in humans, they also acknowledged that the risk was not zero. Therefore there was some potential of resistance being created.


Dr Mike Lormore, Director of Dairy Veterinary Operations, Pfizer Animal Health, summed up the meeting by addressing the issue of consumer perceptions. It is clear that the American public is against the use of antibiotics use as growth promoters.

He said that communicating with consumers about our common values is more important than communicating scientific understanding. "People need to know that you care before they care that you know."

Dr Lormore concluded by saying that providing basic information can have a positive impact on consumer attitudes about meat and dairy, especially regarding the use of antibiotics to treat sick animals. Of the 181 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 149 have been fatal.

MALAYSIA - TDM is to sell its poultry unit for four million ringgit (MYR).

TDM Bhd has proposed to dispose of its wholly-owned unit, TD Poultry Sdn Bhd, to Vision Poultry Sdn Bhd for MYR4 million, reports Business Times of Malaysia.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia, TDM said it aimed to streamline and rationalise the core business of the group with the disposal.

The company added that the proceeds from the disposal would be used and invested as part of capital required for the development of the plantation in Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Meninjau rumah burung walet yang berjaya

SEOUL – Saintis sel stem Korea Selatan, Hwang Woo-suk memperkenalkan lapan klon anjing liar atau koyote semalam dalam satu projek tajaan pihak pentadbiran wilayah Gyeonggi.
Woo-suk menghantar klon-klon itu ke sebuah pusat perlindungan haiwan liar di bandar Pyeongtaek, 50 kilometer ke selatan ibu kota Korea Selatan di sini dalam satu majlis yang dihadiri oleh Gabenor Wilayah Gyeonggi, Kim Moon-soo.
Saintis itu pernah dianggap sebagai wira negara sebelum beberapa penyelidikannya bagi menghasilkan sel stem manusia daripada klon embrio didapati palsu.
Namun, kajiannya dalam menghasilkan klon anjing pertama di dunia, Snuppy, pada 2005 disahkan oleh beberapa pakar dan pihak berkuasa.
Satu kenyataan pejabat gabenor berkenaan menyatakan, Hwang mengambil sel-sel kulit koyote yang dimasukkan ke dalam telur seekor anjing untuk mencipta klon haiwan liar tersebut.
Klon koyote pertama dilahirkan pada 17 Jun lalu.
Sebelum ini pakar-pakar Korea Selatan telah mengklonkan haiwan lembu, kucing, anjing, babi dan serigala.

Feeding Trials Show Potential for 'Ethanol Algae'

PUTRAJAYA: Kerajaan akan menghantar wakil ke China bagi menjelaskan kandungan nitrat sarang burung dari Malaysia mematuhi piawaian ditetapkan Pertubuhan Kesihatan Sedunia (WHO), sekali gus menyangkal dakwaan pihak tertentu bahawa kebanyakan sarang burung dari Malaysia mungkin barang tiruan.

Timbalan Menteri Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani, Datuk Chua Tee Yong, berkata kementeriannya juga sedang bekerjasama dengan industri sarang burung tempatan bagi mewujudkan sistem jejak dagangan (trade tracking) untuk memastikan sarang burung yang dieksport ke China benar-benar berasal dari Malaysia.

“Kita akan mengesyorkan supaya kerajaan China menerima pakai kaedah ini bagi memastikan negara asal sarang burung diimport republik itu. Tidak semua sarang burung dijual di China berasal dari sini, sebaliknya banyak negara lain turut mengeksport produk terbabit.

“Saya juga tidak menolak kemungkinan ada pihak yang memalsukan label buatan Malaysia kerana barang kita terbukti bermutu dan ada permintaan tinggi, seperti yang berlaku kepada buah tembikai baru-baru ini,” katanya selepas merasmikan Hari Telur Sedunia 2011, semalam.

All the energy-efficient lamps tested at the University of Delaware used less energy than standard incandescent ones but one of the new types was less durable than expected. Incandescent lamps will be phased out in the United States from next year and producers are looking for the best alternatives.

Lighting impacts the behaviour, growth and reproduction of poultry, according to Eric Benson and Robert Alphin of the University of Delaware in a report for research sponsored by the US Poultry & Egg Association. They explain that artificial lighting is extensively used in raising commercial poultry. Incandescent lamps, one of the most common forms of lamps in the United States, are being phased out, starting in 2012. This leaves new roles for other lighting technologies, including cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL), compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and light-emitting diodes (LED).

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia, the world's second largest producer of edible bird's nests, is sending a good number of industry players to the 8th China-Asean Expo (CAEXPO 2011) in Nanning, China, next week.
They represent about half of the 36 exhibitors occupying the Health and Wellness segment of the 2,900 sq m Malaysian Pavilion at the Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Among them are Aeries Pure Bird Nest (M) Sdn Bhd, Dragon Bird Nest Sdn Bhd, Ecolite Biotech Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, EBN Industries Sdn Bhd, Golden Swiftlet Product Sdn Bhd, Sari Walit Sdn Bhd and Wing Shen Food Industries Sdn Bhd.

CAEXPO is an annual event held in Nanning since 2004 under the Framework Agreement of China-Asean Comprehensive Economic Cooperation.

It plays an important role in strengthening trade between Malaysia and China as well as with other Asean countries, and serves as an ideal platform for Malaysia to promote its products and services to the combined Chinese and Asean markets of 1.9 billion populace.
"The Chinese love our bird's nest. They know ours are of premium quality," said Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) chief executive officer Dr Wong Lai Sum.

"Every year, a lot of distributors and Chinese companies come to this expo to source for bird's nest.

"Their first stop normally, if they are non-price sensitive and if they are quality sensitive, is the Malaysia Pavilion," she said in an interview.

Humidity and air density
Most people who haven't studied physics or chemistry find it hard to believe that humid air is lighter, or less dense, than dry air. How can the air become lighter if we add water vapor to it?

Scientists have known this for a long time. The first was Isaac Newton, who stated that humid air is less dense than dry air in 1717 in his book, Optics. But, other scientists didn't generally understand this until later in that century.

To see why humid air is less dense than dry air, we need to turn to one of the laws of nature the Italian physicist Amadeo Avogadro discovered in the early 1800s. In simple terms, he found that a fixed volume of gas, say one cubic meter, at the same temperature and pressure, would always have the same number of molecules no matter what gas is in the container. Most beginning chemistry books explain how this works.

Imagine a cubic foot of perfectly dry air. It contains about 78% nitrogen molecules, which each have a molecular weight of 28 (2 atoms with atomic weight 14) . Another 21% of the air is oxygen, with each molecule having a molecular weight of 32 (2 stoms with atomic weight 16). The final one percent is a mixture of other gases, which we won't worry about.

Molecules are free to move in and out of our cubic foot of air. What Avogadro discovered leads us to conclude that if we added water vapor molecules to our cubic foot of air, some of the nitrogen and oxygen molecules would leave — remember, the total number of molecules in our cubic foot of air stays the same.

The water molecules, which replace nitrogen or oxygen, have a molecular weight of 18. (One oxygen atom with atomic weight of 16, and two hudrogen atoms each with atomic weight of 1). This is lighter than both nitrogen and oxygen. In other words, replacing nitrogen and oxygen with water vapor decreases the weight of the air in the cubic foot; that is, it's density decreases.

Wait a minute, you might say, "I know water's heavier than air." True, liquid water is heavier, or more dense, than air. But, the water that makes the air humid isn't liquid. It's water vapor, which is a gas that is lighter than nitrogen or oxygen. (Related:Understanding water in the atmosphere).

Compared to the differences made by temperature and air pressure, humidity has a small effect on the air's density. But, humid air is lighter than dry air at the same temperature and pressure.

MAD COW OR LEMBU GILA DISEASE

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) — commonly referred to as “mad cow disease” — is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) that affects cattle. BSE first was  described in cattle in the United Kingdom (U.K.) in 1986 but has been found in an additional 24 countries since that time. BSE cases in countries outside the U.K. appear to be a result of importation of live cattle that were harvested, rendered and fed back to ruminants, or importation of contaminated meat and bone meal derived from BSE-infected U.K. cattle for use as a protein supplement in cattle feed. As highlighted by the assessment of geographical BSE risk in Europe however, on behalf of the European Commission, most of the primary cases arising from such importations were never recognized. With few exceptions, cases were usually identified only after further recycling in the importing country, a decade or more after BSE was probably first introduced.

It initially was thought that, unlike some other TSE such as scrapie in sheep, there was only one strain of the disease-causing agent (prion) that caused BSE. In recent years evidence has been mounting that, in addition to classical BSE, two previously unrecognized types of BSE exist, although at an extremely low level.

Being an expert in swiftlet farming, I would like to give a few pointers.

The species Aerodramus fuciphagus do not litter their droppings. Their droppings are only within the birdhouse. Extensive droppings in many towns are not from these swiftlets but from mud swallows that make their nest underneath shophouses.

Indeed, swiftlets are hygienic and do not mix with other birds. The moment they fly out of the bird-house, they will not touch the ground until they return to the bird-house. Swiftlets also prey on harmful insects, like fruit flies etc, and can increase the yield of farmers and reduce the use of pesticides. They are natural pest control agents.

However, in the long term, it is important that swiftlet houses are not located in shop­houses in town centres due to aesthetics and noise pollution. They should be stand-alone units within agricultural areas.

As swiftlet farming is now increasingly seen as a financial gold mine, there are a few pointers potential investors must understand.

One disturbing trend is the development of huge bird-house complexes in one location. These are sold as units to potential buyers on the claim that these bird-houses will be filled with birds within a short time.
