No Bird Flu in Guangdong, Say Authorities
CHINA - Sources with the provincial department of agriculture said only one test sample collected from a duck in Jiangnan bazaar of meats and vegetables was suspected of being positive for the deadly H5 bird flu virus.
The samples were sent to the State's laboratory for further examination, according to a press release from Guangdong provincial department of agriculture.
"More than 40 samples collected from poultry in local meat and vegetable bazaars have been examined since the beginning of the month, and all the samples were negative," said the press release.
The Guangdong provincial department of agriculture has also issued a notice to relevant cities and departments, asking them to expand examination and stress sterilization work on local live poultry booths and bazaars to prevent the outbreak of bird flu in the province, which borders the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.
The notice was issued after a 2-year-old boy who had visited a poultry bazaar in Guangzhou's Haizhu district tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza in Hong Kong earlier this month.
The boy is still in hospital in Hong Kong, but all 22 contacts he had were examined and found to be negative for the H5N1 virus, according to sources with Guangdong provincial department of health.
In another development, He Jianfeng, director of Guangdong Provincial Institute of Infectious Disease Control and Prevention, said Guangdong is now experiencing a high incidence of flu.
"The spread of flu has entered into the peak period in Guangdong, with many outbreaks having been reported in schools and kindergartens in previous months," Mr Jianfeng told local media.
And 92.2 per cent of the flu is type A, caused by H3N2 virus, while 7.8 per cent is type B, said Mr Jianfeng.
He predicted that the number of flu patients will continue to grow in the province in the coming months, reaching a peak in July.
And the cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan and Zhanjiang have been hardest hit, he said.
Guangdong has been on the warning list for flu, meaning that flu patients have made up more than 5 per cent of the province's total number of outpatients since March, he added.
Mr Jianfeng urged experts and doctors from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to expand co-operation in preventing and curing the disease.
Luo Xuequn, a professor from the Paediatrics Department of Zhongshan No 1 Hospital affiliated to Sun Yatsen University, said the number of children coming to his hospital because of flu has doubled in the past two months.
"Paediatricians are seeing more than 500 children a day," he said.
Zhong Shijie, a doctor from Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicines, said the number of flu patients in his hospital has grown by 20 to 30 per cent since May.
"The hospital now has to cope with more than 3,000 flu patients a day, accounting for more than 15 per cent of outpatients," Dr Shijie said.
He added that the hospital has opened a special clinic to treat flu patients

10-year-old Cambodian girl dies from bird flu: WHO
PHNOM PENH: A 10-year-old Cambodian girl has died from bird flu, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Monday, the country's third fatality from the virulent disease this year.
The child developed a fever and shortness of breath on May 20 and died on Sunday, the WHO said in a joint statement with the Cambodian health ministry.
Hospital tests confirmed she had contracted the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.
"There is evidence of recent deaths among poultry in the village and the patient prepared sick chicken for food prior to becoming sick," the statement said.
The girl, from southwestern Kampong Speu province, is the 21st person in Cambodia to become infected with the H5N1 virus since 2003. Nineteen of those cases have been fatal.
The H5N1 strain has killed 357 people worldwide since 2003, according to WHO statistics.
Concerns about avian influenza have risen in the region with China, Vietnam and Indonesia all reporting deaths from the virus this year.
The virus typically spreads from birds to humans through direct contact, but experts fear it could mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans, with the potential to kill millions in a pandemic.

Try to read thiss!
Sorry, I'd to disagree with Summer about spending the RM1k to attend seminars of those famous sifus in return for goodies such as sounds, etc. Not all 'famous' sifus are that good.
My bhse was revamped by one of these famous blogger sifu and I was very disappointed by his lack of experience & knowledge shown by his revamp works. Some more, he got the guts to give seminars, acting like a 'sifu' to those newbies. Keep the money and go buy & read some books on swiftlet farming better..:

El Nino Risk Rising
GLOBAL - Improved moisture conditions throughout the southwestern US has lessened the possibility of drought for many farms and ranches in 2012. However, El Nino conditions may emerge over the Pacific Ocean by mid-August affecting Indian rains in some areas of the country in the second half of the June to September monsoon season.Regions of Southeast Asia and Australia are also likely to be affected by an El Nino, which was reponsible for a decade-long Australian drought, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
In contrast, the opposite La Nina weather pattern, has brought flooding to Eastern Australia in the past two years.
El Nino conditions, which can parch Asia and bring cooler weather to the US, may develop this year as the Pacific Ocean warms.
El Nino is a warming of ocean surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific, the opposite of La Nina.
The El Nino phenomenon occurs every three to seven years, and strong El Ninos can lead to strong weakening of the trade winds that blow west across the Pacific, triggering drought in southeast Asia and Australia and parts of Africa. While Australia's Bureau of Meteorology seven climate models hint at a return to El Nino, the World Meteorological Organization said last week it still maintains its neutral outlook for the second half of the year.

Maize growers in trouble
Sohel Parvez
Maize growers fear losses due to falling prices of the grain as demand for poultry feed slumps after bird flu wiped out 25,000 farms in the last one year, farmers and traders said.
Prices of maize fell to Tk 11-13 a kg at farmers' level in May from almost Tk 20 in the same month a year ago, according to growers in maize producing districts.
"Traders are losing interest in maize. If some traders want to buy at all, they want to buy on credit, not cash," said Abul Hossain Molla, a maize grower at Damuda of Chuadanga, a major maize growing district.
Prices of maize, mostly used in poultry feed mills, may fall further as growers and traders expect higher production due to more acreage for maize farming.
Maize farming rose 24 percent to 6.99 lakh acres in the current fiscal year from 5.60 lakh acres from fiscal 2010-11, according to initial data from the Department of Agricultural Extension.
The DAE is yet to finalise its production estimate. But traders and crop extension officials expect that output will exceed 10.18 lakh tonnes, an estimate by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.
"The current prices are lower than my production costs, which has increased in the last one year because of increased prices of fuel, fertiliser and labour cost," said Azizul Haque, a grower in Chuadanga.
Haque produced a kilogram of maize spending Tk 14 this year. "The government should withdraw restrictions on exports to cushion farmers against losses," he said.
Sudhir Chandra Nath, head of the agro and food security programme of BRAC, said middlemen and millers are using higher production and lower demand for maize in poultry feed mills as an opportunity to drive down prices.
"A section of millers and middlemen want to take advantage of the situation," the official, who sells maize seeds, said.
“Farmers are more interested to sell off maize fearing erosion of quality as they do not have any capacity to store.”
Md Moqbul Hossain, a maize grower in Bogra, said sold his stock at Tk 15 a kg last month and avoided losses.
He demanded the government buy maize to protect farmers against any loss.
AKM Azad, president of Maize Association of Bangladesh, a grouping of traders, said maize production this year would exceed annual demand for 12 lakh tonnes.
"The government should immediately lift all restrictions on maize exports," he said, expecting maize output will cross 15 lakh tonnes this year.
In August 2008, the caretaker government restricted maize exports by fixing a minimum export price of $600 a tonne.

New Technique Used to Discover New Viruses in Poultry
18 May 2012
US - In a search to find better ways to control viral enteric diseases in birds, US Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists have unearthed a treasure trove of previously known and unknown viruses in poultry by using a powerful new molecular tool called metagenomics.

Each year, disorders like poult enteritis mortality syndrome, poult enteritis complex, and runting-stunting syndrome cause diarrhea in turkeys and chickens, resulting in decreased weight, mortality and increased production costs. Several viruses have been associated with enteric or intestinal diseases, but no single causative agent has been found.
Unlike traditional sequencing that characterizes genes in a single organism, metagenomics detects the nucleic acid of thousands of organisms in an entire community. Using this technique, Laszlo Zsak, researcher leader of the Endemic Poultry Viral Diseases Research Unit at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory in Athens, Georgia, discovered a new virus that might have future antimicrobial applications.
ARS is the chief intramural scientific research agency of USDA.
Dr Zsak and ARS microbiologist Michael Day, also at Athens, found a short DNA sequence of the newly discovered virus and designed a technique to sequence its entire genome. The virus, called "phiCA82," is the type of virus that naturally kills bacteria and belongs to a group known as "microphages" or phages, which can potentially be used as alternatives to antibiotics and as tools to fight multi-drug-resistant pathogens.
In the study, the scientists extracted and analyzed nucleic acid from poultry intestine samples gathered from US commercial poultry flocks infected with enteric diseases. In addition to the novel phage, common avian viruses like astrovirus, reovirus and rotavirus, and RNA viruses belonging to the Picornaviridae family were detected. However, the scientists were surprised to discover previously unknown turkey viruses like picobirnavirus, a virus implicated in enteric disease in other agricultural animals, and a calicivirus, a type of virus often associated with human enteric diseases.
In earlier studies, Drs Zsak and Day used metagenomics to identify and analyze for the first time the complete genome of a novel chicken parvovirus. They also developed a PCR-polymerase chain reaction-assay that is highly sensitive and specific in detecting viruses in birds.

Bird’s nest export issue again and again
BEIJING: There are no more major outstanding issues for the resumption of Malaysian bird's nest exports to China, except for some technical matters that should be resolved in the coming days.
Veterinary Services Department director-general Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin is now in China to settle the technical part, said Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar.
Dr Abdul Aziz would also clarify any enquiries from his counterpart in China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) on the protocol so that both parties would break the deadlock and get the ban lifted.
“The technical part of the protocol should be resolved in a week or two. Dr Abdul Aziz will not return to Malaysia until it is resolved. WE take your words boss.........
“After that, I will present it to the Cabinet and eventually have it signed between Malaysia and China,” said Noh after meeting AQSIQ minister Zhi Shuping here yesterday.
Noh said both countries had already agreed that only bird's nest products containing permissible nitrite levels of 30 parts per million (ppm) or below could be exported to China.
China is the largest export market for Malaysian bird's nest with 100 tonnes in 2010.
The swiftlet industry has been severely hit since the Chinese authorities halted bird's nest imports from Malaysia last July, when samples taken from the so-called blood nest products contained nitrite levels that did not meet China's health standards.
Many investors borrowed money from financial institutions to build swiftlet houses in Malaysia.
Agro Bank alone had given loans worth over RM1bil to investors.
“If this issue is not settled fast, the industry will fall apart,” said Noh
Datuk should settle this issue before PRU 13!! Dont drag too long boss!! tak boleh tahan lagi , swiftlet farmer cannot take it anymore

N THE NAME OF RELIGION: Ex-IGP says Pas leader misleading Muslims
KUALA LUMPUR: FORMER inspector-general of police Tan Sri Rahim Noor has labelled Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat the "father of kafir (infidels)" for misleading Muslims to believe that it is their religious duty to support Bersih 3.0.
Rahim said it was not the first time Nik Aziz had said this to confuse the people.
"Many years ago, he said Umno supporters would go to hell, and if Muslims wanted to go to heaven, they must support Pas.
"He also called Umno kafir because of its association with MCA and MIC. But look at Pas today -- it has teamed up with DAP, a political party that rejects an Islamic state," he told the New Straits Times yes terday.
Rahim said when a respected ulama such as Nik Aziz declared that it was the religious duty of Muslims to support Bersih, people would take it as wajib (compulsory) despite the government's stand that the gathering had violated the laws of peaceful assembly.
"He may be recognised and respected as an ulama because of his credentials, but he is just another political animal who wants to maintain his power in Kelantan."
Rahim said young Muslims should investigate who were the real organisers of Bersih 3.0 and not just follow blindly.
"For Muslims who understand this, they see Nik Aziz as a joker, nothing else," he said, adding that he supported the National Fatwa Council's call for Muslims who took part in the April 28 rally to repent as their actions were un-Islamic.
The council on Sunday also issued a fatwa that it was haram (forbidden) for Muslims to participate in demonstrations that had the intention of overthrowing a legitimate government and with the propensity of causing havoc.
In an immediate response, Nik Aziz said a demonstration would only become chaotic if the people were not allowed to participate.
He said the council was biased when it issued the fatwa. On his Facebook page, Nik Aziz said it had issued the fatwa with one eye closed.
"What can be more peaceful than a sit-in demonstration?" he asked.
Pas vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said the party would respect the fatwa, but added that most of the participants who were at the rally came with good intentions.
"Our intention has always been good. If not, we would have brought weapons to cause chaos." Additional reporting by Nik Imran Abdullah

Lubang Antara Lantai
Pengalaman mengatasi cabaran...... wassalam
