Herefords

Herefords are an ancient breed, kept in Herefordshire in western England for centuries. They gained their modern appearance around 1800 by crossing with cattle from Flanders.  Originally, Herefords were large framed draught cattle, some weighing over 3,000 pounds. During the nineteenth century there was selective breeding for early maturity, which entailed a reduction in the size of the frame. The first herd book was published in 1846, and later adopted by the 'Hereford Herd Book Society', founded in 1878. 

Hereford are medium framed cattle with distinctive red body color with the head and front of the neck, the brisket, underside, and switch in white. They have well developed fore-quarters, a deep brisket, broad head and stocky legs. Most animals have short thick horns that typically curve down at the sides of the head, but there is a polled strain in North America and UK (Polled Hereford).

Bird flu comfirmed in west bengal district

WEST BENGAL, INDIA - Fresh cases of bird flu were reported from West Bengal's southern district of Nadia, official reports said today, 20 September.
Though the cases were not yet alarming, the fear of a bird flu (H5N1) was confirmed by the laboratory in Bhopal.

Bird Flu Alert in Assam

ASSAM, INDIA - The state is on alert after the detection of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus in poultry in villages in the Dhubri district.

An alert has been sounded across Assam following detection of bird flu virus in Dhubri district, a top police official said on 10 September. According to Hindustan Times, a Bhopal-based forensic laboratory confirmed that the samples sent to it for testing was positive and the district administration has taken steps for immediate culling of birds in 14 villages in Agomoni area of the district, Deputy Commissioner, Sunil Dutta said.

The target includes the culling of 30,000 birds and the process was initiated in two villages a week ago with the entire process likely to be completed within the following four days, he said.

Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed for the purpose, he said, adding that compensation to the poultry owners would be paid according to the rates fixed by the government.

Viet Nam Reports Three New Outbreaks of Bird Flu

VIET NAM - Three new outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have been reported in the central and northern regions of the country.

The veterinary authorities sent Follow Up report No. 56 dated 5 Sept.

The report describes three new outbreaks of HPAI between 18 and 26 August in village flocks in the provinces of Quang Ngai, Quang Tri and Thai Binh. All birds that did not die of the disease have been destroyed.

What is a breed?

The classic definition of a "breed" is usually stated as a variation of this statement.

Animals that, through selection and breeding, have come to resemble one another and pass those traits uniformly to their offspring.
The Holstein cow originated in Europe. The major historical developement of this breed occured in what is now the Holland and more specifically in the two northern provices of North Holland and Friesland which lay on either side of the Zuider Zee. The original stock were the black animals and white animals of the Batavians and Friesians, migrant European tribes who settled in the Rhine   Delta region about 2,000 years ago.

. With such situation adult birds would avoid such Bhs when they want to make nests. This is birds’ natural instinct they seemed to know which Bhs is best for them. That is why some Bhs could attract more birds than others. During this period the Rh has to be at 85% constantly. This is the most crucial period.

One      of the most important things to do during this haze period is to make sure your Bhs Humidity (Rh ) is at its optimum level. Optimum level of Rh would reduce the effect of haze in Bhs

Secondly       having water sprinkles outside the entrance hole would help. Now you know why Indonesia’s Bhs have water or mist sprinkler at their entrance holes.

Third,        if the smog/haze is too thick and continued for weeks/months your Bhs would smell like a smoke house. Birds don’t like such environment. We may not notice it as human nose is not as sensitive as birds. To counter this you need to spray Aroma to reduce the smoke effect.

Very good news for swiftlet player

IPOH: Recent reports of high nitrite content in some bird's nest products from Malaysia have not affected demand for the delicacy in China.

Producers in Malaysia, however, need to practise strict quality control to restore the confidence of consumers in China, said Xu Yu Fei, vice-mayor of Wenzhou city in the republic's southeastern Zhejiang province.

She admitted that consumer confidence in China had been “slightly affected” following the reports.

“Local producers need to redouble their efforts in promoting their products in China and to prove to consumers their products are of a high quality,” she said.

Xu was speaking to reporters after a business matching and dialogue session between local businessmen and their counterparts from Wenzhou here yesterday.

SEORANG lelaki terjun dari bangunan WTC yang runtuh akibat serangan pengganas sedekad lalu.

NEW YORK, Amerika Syarikat (AS) - Seramai 200 orang dilaporkan terjun dari Menara Berkembar Pusat Dagangan Dunia (WTC) di sini ketika pengganas menyerang beberapa lokasi utama di AS pada 11 September 2001, lapor sebuah akhbar semalam.

Berdasarkan rekod tidak rasmi, hampir semuanya menemui ajal secara bersendirian tetapi beberapa saksi mengakui mereka pernah menyaksikan satu pasangan terjun sambil berpegangan tangan.

Malah kata saksi, ketika berada di hujung nyawa seorang wanita turut dilihat memegang kuat skirtnya supaya dia tidak mati dalam keadaan yang memalukan.

Sebahagian lagi mangsa cuba membuat payung terjun daripada langsir dan alas meja tetapi daya graviti menyebabkan ia terlucut daripada pegangan sekali gus menyebabkan nyawa mereka melayang.

"Mangsa-mangsa itu memilih untuk terjun daripada mati terbakar dan saya dapat melihat mereka jatuh seorang demi seorang," kata seorang anggota bomba yang bertugas pada hari kejadian, Maureen McArdle-Schulman.

"Kerana terlalu ngeri, saya dan seorang rakan setugas mengalihkan pandangan kami pada dinding bangunan berdekatan, namun kami masih dapat mendengar bunyi tubuh mereka terhempas di tanah," tambahnya.

Menurutya, dia turut berang dengan tindakan sebahagian individu tidak berhati perut di lokasi kejadian yang merakam mangsa- mangsa itu terjun.

Hampir semua mangsa terjun dari tingkat-tingkat teratas WTC. Mereka jatuh pada kelajuan 200 kilometer sejam dan memiliki 10 saat untuk mengimbas kembali hidup mereka sebelum menemui ajal di tanah.

WTC yang setinggi 417 meter dan memiliki 110 tingkat, terdiri daripada Menara Utara dan Menara Selatan dibuka kepada orang ramai pada 1973. Pembinaannya ketika itu menelan belanja AS$400 juta (RM1.2 bilion).

Pada 11 September 2011, kumpulan pengganas merempuh dua pesawat Boeing 757 ke atas WTC yang menyebabkan ia terbakar dan runtuh. Kejadian itu meragut 2,753 nyawa.

Sebelum ini, berita dan gambar-gambar mereka tidak disiarkan media AS.

Pemerintah AS beranggapan bahawa mereka yang memilih untuk membunuh diri daripada mati terbunuh sebagai tidak patriotik sekali gus mencalar imej negara.

The influence of nest harvesting upon nest construction and egg-laying

The influence of nest harvesting upon nest construction and egg-laying was studied in the White-nest Swiftlet Aerodramus fuciphagus and the Black-nest Swiftlet A. maximus in Singapore. A study of nestling energetics allowed an estimate to be made of adult foraging abilities. The energy and nutrients required for nest construction are easily acquired by foraging but the females may face a shortage of energy or depletion of stored lipids during egg formation. Removal of nests did not affect the size or quality of replacement nests or clutches, but may aggravate the lipid shortage. Nest removal did reduce breeding success in replacement nests and, in the White-nest Swiftlet, disturbance to the colony resulted in an increased laying interval between first and second eggs. Our results indicated that commercially exploited colonies should be left unharvested for the whole of the breeding season to allow a period of successful reproduction.

starving dogs in Indonesia eat owner

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Seven dogs starved of food and water for two weeks are suspected of eating their Indonesian owner after he returned to his hometown in Manado from a holiday, local media reported Tuesday.

A neighbourhood guard was curious when he saw luggage lined up at the front of Andre Lumboga's house, days after the 50-year old arrived back home. He approached the house, smelled something foul and called the police, according to a report.

"His skull was found in the kitchen, and his body was found in the front of his house," Eriyana, a local police chief in Batam, an island off Sumatra, told VIVAnews website.

Lumboga arrived home last Wednesday, but his body was just discovered Monday.

"We suspect that the dogs were hungry, so they attacked Andre, because they had not been fed for 14 days," he said. Police also found bones of two other dogs, believed to have also been eaten by the hungry canines.

Issue sarang burung jenis berdarah

BEIJING 26 Ogos - Industri sarang burung di Malaysia tidak menghasilkan sarang burung walet jenis Berdarah (Merah) tetapi hanya mengeluarkan jenis Maharaja Putih, kata Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Perkhidmatan Veterinar, Datuk Dr. Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin.

Beliau berkata, kemungkinan terdapat sebilangan kecil sarang burung berwarna merah asli yang mungkin disebabkan oleh tindak balas kimia antara air liur burung itu dengan persekitaran.

Malaysia merupakan satu-satunya negara ASEAN yang mewujudkan garis panduan menyeluruh bagi industri sarang burung bagi memastikan tahap keselamatan dan kualiti produk itu terjamin, katanya pada sidang media di sini hari ini.

Beliau mengadakan sidang itu bagi menyanggah beberapa laporan yang mendakwa kononnya sarang burung tercemar yang ditemui oleh badan pemantau kualiti Wilayah Zhejiang di timur China baru-baru ini adalah diimport dari Malaysia.

Antibiotik terutama tetracycline digunakan secara meluas dalam pengeluaran ternakan bagi terapii dan peningkatan berat badan.

Bahan berkenaan dimasukkan ke dalam makanan bagi merangsang peningkatan berat selain menghalang jangkitan penyakit.

Biasanya antibiotik berkenaan diberikan bermula dalam makanan permulaan atau starter sehingga ke 'finisher' atau hingga ayam disembelih.

Biasanya antibiotik akan berkumpul dalam tisu haiwan ternakan dan memasuki rantaian makanan apabila ternakan berkenaan disembelih, dijual dan dimakan oleh manusia.

Antibiotik stabil sehingga sembilan bulan dan tidak terurai malah akan terkumpul di dalam otot, hati dan kulit.
Daging ayam merupakan makanan utama dalam diet manusia, Antibiotik yang terdapat dalam daging ayam mungkin boleh mendatangkan kesan kepada manusia seperti rentan kepada antibiotik serta memberikan kesan karsinogenik (penyebab kanser).

Disebabkan penggunaan antibiotik menjadi semakin penting dalam pengeluaran makanan, pihak berkuasa perlu mengambil langkah tertentu bagi mengukur kesan sisanya dalam makanan.

Bagi memastikan produk makanan yang selamat untuk penggunaan tempatan dan antarabangsa, keupayaan mengesan sisa antibiotik dalam ternakan ayam sangat penting.

Sistem pengesanan antibiotik yang ideal biasanya dirujuk sebagai imbasan mikrobiologi diikuti dengan ujian ELISA dan pengesahan akhir serta kuantiti menggunakan analisis HPLC atau GCMS.

Walaupun analisis berkenaan menggunakan peralatan yang sensitif tetapi ia amat mahal dan memakan masa yang lama.

Justeru gabungan jalur biosensor yang dibangunkan oleh Institut Penyelidikan dan Kemajuan Pertanian Malaysia (MARDI) dan peralatan digital mudah alih yang dibangunkan oleh Rapid Lab Sdn. Bhd. bagi pemantauan antibiotik mampu dimiliki dan sesuai bagi mendapatkan keputusan yang cepat.

Pegawai penyelidik di Pusat Penyelidikan Bioteknologi, MARDI, Dr. Faridah Salam berkata, teknologi yang dibangun berdasarkan kepada produk antibiotik tempatan sangat berkaitan dengan pemantauan antibiotik.

Ini kerana jalur berkenaan boleh digunakan di lapangan pada masa sebenar.

"Jalur berkenaan mempunyai potensi pasaran yang besar bagi penggunaan eksport dan tempatan bernilai sehingga RM250 juta.

"Sejak Kementerian Kesihatan meningkatkan keupayaan mengimbas kandungan antibiotik dalam produk berasaskan ayam, jalur biosensor merupakan teknik terbaik bagi imbasan antibiotik," katanya.

Biasanya paras antibiotik yang selamat adalah 100 bahagian per bilion atau 100 mikrogram bagi satu kilogram.

Dr. Faridah berkata, selalunya hanya penternak industri ayam yang besar mengikut peraturan yang ditetapkan oleh Jabatan Perkhidmatan Veterinar (JPV).

Dianggarkan kos imbasan saja menyumbang kira-kira 10 peratus daripada jumlah kos pasaran.

Pada tahun pertama, jalur berkenaan dijangka dapat memasuki 10 peratus pasaran segmen ujian dengan pertumbuhan lima hingga 10 peratus setahun.

Berdasarkan segmen pasaran, produk berkenaan dijangka menjana pendapatan sebanyak RM2.5 juta setahun.

Blood's nest issue

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry is working with the Chinese government to determine the level of nitrite permissible for Malaysian bird’s nest.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said China wanted a zero ppm (parts per million) nitrate level while Malaysia’s standard is 30ppm.

“So, we are still discussing to reach a middle ground on the issue,” he said during a Hari Raya open house celebration at Istana Negara yesterday.

Liow was responding to reports of people masquerading as Malaysian government officials who have been promoting a type of bird’s nest called “blood’s nest” that contains high levels of nitrite.

The 30ppm nitrite level is based on the MS 2334 : 2010 Edible-Bird Nest (EBN) Specification and is also in line with the Food Regulations 1985.

Liow stressed that the group was not representing the ministry or any other Malaysian government agency.

In a July 26 press conference in China, two men who claimed to be heads of the “Malaysia Export Veterinary Inspection Agency” and “Malaysian Endangered Species Import and Export Administration” told the media that blood’s nest imported from Malaysia was genuine and had an acceptable level of nitrite.

What senior Sifu said

Those areas where there are lots of bird shits below them with external sound playing will have little chance of nests but those playing with internal sound tweeters will eventually resulted in nests.

First there will be bird shit and soon, about two to three months or so you will start seeing some feathers on the spot.

The moment the feathers are on the floor you will soon find that there will be some kind of nest markings above the spot.

If you are lucky the marking will eventually turned into nest.

The nest making process is nearly the same and you will see this over and over again.

Remember, the chance of having nests is higher if the birdshit is found below the internal sound tweeters as compared to external sound tweeter.
There must be some reason for this but i know for the fact that the internal sound are usually played much longer as compared to the external sound.
